Carpenters Pre-Apprenticeship Training

The Carpenters Pre-Apprenticeship Training (also known as BuildingWorks) is our 4-week training that prepares you for the NYC District Council of Carpenters Apprenticeship. Sessions include 40 hours of site safety training and strategies to navigate and complete the 4-year apprenticeship. Classes are offered throughout the year at the Carpenters Training Center. Successful graduates join the UBC and begin the apprenticeship, securing a career with high earning potential and benefits.

Program Outcomes

We have been operating our pre-apprenticeship training since 1995 and have successfully graduated thousands of individuals. As a NYS Department of Labor approved pre-apprenticeship training with Direct Entry Status, program graduates access apprenticeship opportunities with the NYC District Council of Carpenters. Our long-term follow up continues to show substantial increases in income for the 80% of program graduates who began the apprenticeship.

Our Supporters

The CTC is funded largely through contributions from participating employers to provide training to apprentices and journeypersons. To comply with the Employee Retirement Income Security Act (ERISA), funds from these contributions can only be applied to services for union members (apprentices and journeypersons). We must raise support from separate sources to run our pre-apprenticeship training. Current funding includes a federal grant from the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences (NIEHS). NYS Department of Labor, Equinor Offshore Wind Ecosystem Fund, Champlain Hudson Power Express Green Economy Fund and DEWALT Grow the Trades. BuildingWorks also participates in the CWE Jobs to Build On (JtBO) program supported by the NYC Council.
