Department of Construction Management and Civil Engineering Technology

The Department of Construction Management and Civil Engineering (CMCE) Technology at the New York City College of Technology has provided trained engineering and construction management technicians for New York City’s construction and public works industries since 1947. Students are offered multiple program options, which share a closely aligned base of major courses, along with a strong foundation of general education coursework. The CMCE department currently offers the following programs:

Construction Technology Bachelor of Technology (BTech)
Construction Management Associate of Applied Science (AAS)
Construction Management Certificate

In the Construction Management associate degree program, we prepare students for success within the professional practice of construction management. This preparation includes an understanding of the design, engineering, business, and technical principles and practices used in the construction industry. As future leaders in the construction industry, students are made aware of their ethical, social, and legal responsibilities as practicing professionals.

In the Construction Technology bachelor degree program, students are trained to enter a professional field which requires designing, planning, construction, and management of infrastructure. Construction engineers are a hybrid between civil engineers and construction managers. Coursework focuses on the design as well as the construction management of highways, bridges, airports, railroads, buildings, dams and utilities. This allows our graduates to understand both the design processes as well as the building requirements needed to design and build today’s infrastructure, particularly in New York City.

The Training Center has an arrangement for our apprentices, graduates, and members to earn credits toward an Associate of Science in Applied Science in Construction Management or Bachelors of Technology in Construction Technology. Apprentices may enroll at any time during their apprenticeship or any time after graduation. College credits are available for:

Carpenters who began apprenticeship in the Fall of 2002 or later
Millwrights who began apprenticeship in the Fall of 2003 or later
Cabinetmakers who began apprenticeship in the Fall of 2004 or later
Floor Coverers who began apprenticeship in the Fall of 2005 or later.

Certified Certificate of Completion

Certified Certificate of Completion, indicating successful completion of all required examinations and course requirements for those District Council of Carpenters’ Training Center (LTC) courses identified below, must be presented upon admission to the program, whereupon credits will be awarded and applied toward the Associate degree in Construction Management as indicated below.

Transfer credit will be awarded for the following courses:

CMCE 1114 Materials and Methods of Construction I 3 credits
CMCE 1210 Construction Drawings II – Introduction to AutoCAD 1 credit

Associate in Applied Science in Construction Management

The CMCE department prepares our students for the following Program Educational Objectives to achieve or progress towards during their first few years after graduation:

Be employed as engineering or surveying technicians, inspectors, assistant project managers or CADD operators;
Pursue advanced degrees in civil engineering, construction or facilities management; and
Be encouraged to work towards obtaining professional licensure and certifications;

The Construction Management program is the only one of its kind in the CUNY system. It prepares students for careers as managers and technicians in the field of construction. All facets of the construction process are studied, including construction materials, methods, management and mechanical systems as well as all elements of design. Both the public and private sectors are studied from the time the project is conceptualized until it is turned over to an owner. The program combines an emphasis on construction management with components of engineering technology. This degree includes within its core of construction management courses important components of both mathematics and physics to give the entry-level construction manager a variety of technical skills, including an understanding of basic structural analysis and design.

Applicants are urged to complete at least one year of academic mathematics in high school to avoid delaying their progress in this curriculum.

Students may continue their education directly by enrolling in the department’s Bachelor of Technology in Construction Management.

In addition, students who have successfully completed the requirements for this degree are eligible for transfer into the Bachelor of Technology in Facilities Management program with a concentration in Construction Management.

Bachelor of Technology in Construction Technology

The CMCE department prepares our students for the following Program Educational Objectives to achieve or progress towards during their first few years after graduation:

Be employed as construction engineers, construction managers, construction foremen, estimators, construction supervisors, inspectors or project engineers
Pursue advanced degrees in civil engineering, construction or facilities management; and
Be encouraged to work towards obtaining professional licensure and certifications;

Construction technology is a professional field which requires designing, planning, construction, and management of infrastructure. This program is the only program of its kind in the City University of New York (CUNY) system. This is a hybrid degree between civil engineers and construction managers.
