MEMO FULL TEXT:
All Apprentice
This is Peter Bennett Director of Training for the New York City District Council of Carpenters Training Center and along with Richard Wong the Assistant Director, we wanted to take this opportunity to send a message out to all of our NYCDCCTC Apprentices. This is a message of encouragement and hope. We would like to encourage you all to continue on with your career paths. We hope to help you all achieve your goals and dreams of becoming a skilled Union Carpenter and completing your apprenticeship program. A lot has happened quickly in these unprecedented times we live in, and as NYC has begun its PHASE ONE re-opening process, all of our construction industry jobs have now been deemed essential. So, it is very important for us to carry on and get back to our work and our training. Together we will continue to rebuild our infrastructure and our lives in this great city. The CTC has been working hard to help all of our apprentice and journey level members by offering online distance learning classes. These SST safety classes are listed on the CTC website at https://nyccarpenterstrainingcenter.org/ and will count toward your apprenticeship training. The UBC has also offered remote learning classes on the ITC Learning Management System Visit Carpenters.org to login. These also count toward your apprenticeship training. We are also working on apprentice curriculum for distance learning and will soon be scheduling remote apprentice classes. This along with the hands-on training (which will happen when NYS restriction guidelines allow us to do so) are only 2 parts of this that we can help you with. Staying within the NYSDOL Apprenticeship Guidelines, we will need your help to achieve the third part of this. The third part of this is getting back to work and increasing your OJT hours.
On -The-Job Training
In addition to classroom training, each apprentice is required to work in the trade for participating (signatory) contractors to fulfill the on-the-job training component of the CTC program. Apprentices must complete a minimum of 1,300 hours of on-the-job training per year for a total of 5,200 hours over the course of a four (4) year apprenticeship program and 6,500 hours of on-the-job training over the course of a five (5) year apprenticeship program to satisfy Federal, New York City, New York State and UBC apprenticeship requirements.
Apprentices are required to register with the New York City District Council of Carpenters Job Referral Department (OWL) when unemployed and accept the work assignment when referred. Failure to accept a work assignment and/or not show up for work when directed by the New York City District Council of Carpenters Job Referral Department may result in termination from the program.
OJT Requirement to Register, Accept & Show up For Work Assignments
All apprentices are required by the Carpenters Training Center and the Department of Labor to:
- Put their name on the OWL whenever they are unemployed and not on medical leave.
- Complete 1,300 hours of OJT per year.
- To perform the work of the trade of which the apprentice is registered for with the New York State Department of Labor. Work tasks must coincide with the Work Processes Outline for their registered trade.
- Accept all employment opportunities offered, including but not limited to, Project Labor Agreement jobs, Market Recovery Addendum jobs, or any other Collective Bargaining Agreement Modifications.
- Show up on time for all job assignments every day.
- Fill out and email Blue Books to the CTC quarterly upon request from the New York State Apprentice Representative.
We hope to see you all down at the CTC soon. Please feel free to reach out if you have any questions or concerns pertaining to your training. You can call the CTC at (212) 727-2224 or email us at ctc@nycdcctc.org
Wishing you all health, safety & prosperity in your careers.
Fraternally
